Antabuse changed my life.
A few years ago, my life revolved around alcohol. From the moment I finished work until the moment I passed out, I was drinking. I would average 350ml of vodka a day. While I never experienced the stereotypical “rock bottom,” health issues started mounting, and I was by all accounts a pretty hardcore alcoholic.
I knew I had to stop, but I couldn’t. I was in and out of counselling. In and out of Alcoholics Anonymous. I tried The Sinclair Method, Naltrexone, but nothing could stop me. I’d abstain for days, weeks, sometimes even months, only to relapse.
I am now 3+ years sober. I have had a couple of “cheat days”, but I haven’t fallen back into the same pattern. How?
Antabuse aka disulfiram
I tried counselling, Alcoholics Anonymous,
, The Sinclair Method, Naltrexone.
All failed. I had periods of drinking, but I ultimately came back after a few days/weeks/months.
I am now sober for 3+ years. Well – during those three years, I have probably drank 4-5 times. One off occasions. I call them my cheat days. I won’t have one more than twice a year.
How did I get here? What was it that pulled me out of my addiction? Antabuse aka disulfiram.
This little pill quite literally saved me. I take one every day, and as long as I’m taking it, I can’t drink. If I do, I will have a violent and painful reaction. I make sure I take it first thing every day.
When I would try to quit in the past – when I woke up at 9am – “today is the day I’m gonna quit”. By 5pm that was out of the window.
Now, I wake up at 9am “today I will be sober”. I take my pill. If I change my mind at 5pm? Too bad.
Antabuse has fallen out of favour in recent years. This is because…
